Autumn
gardening is an absolute pleasure, especially in our beautiful
warm climate, and this is a wonderful time to plant vitamin
rich Cabbages.
PLANTING
Cabbages can either be grown from seed & transplanted
out, or you can buy them as seedlings. Either way they love
a rich soil and lots of direct sunlight. Choose a good sunny
position, and dig into the soil generous quantities of Searles
5 in 1® Organic Plant Food. Sprinkle the Searles 5 in 1® onto
the soil at about 2-3cm deep and then dig this into the top
10cm of soil. Give the soil a good watering before planting.
When planting out, space them about 60cm apart (approximately
2 feet) and give them a good watering.
FERTILISING
Cabbages are heavy feeders and do well with regular liquid
fertilising. Apply Searles® Fish & Kelp Liquid Fertiliser
every week over the foliage & drench the soil. Not only
will this promote better growth, but it will also help protect
the Cabbages from pests & disease.
WATERING
Now the trick for delicious Cabbages is to water them regularly
and don't let them dry out. If they dry out for extended periods
of time, they loose their delicious flavour and become a bit
hard and tough.
HARVESTING
Cabbages are ready to harvest once the heads feel hard and
firm. Cut the head away from the main stem using a clean,
sharp knife, and then wash the cabbage clean. Now your lovely
cabbages are ready for eating, or you can store them in the
fridge for later. |
